Kan is a drone pilot and instructor for the drone course with Trident Defense Initiative.
โ€จ
Kan joined the AFU shortly after the Russian invasion began. โ€œI wasnโ€™t scared, thatโ€™s not the right word, I was interested, it was interesting.โ€ Translation can be difficult at times but our understanding was that it was exhilarating, perhaps the adrenaline and โ€œexcitementโ€ of it all.
โ€จ
He originally joined a scout / reconnaissance section within the 113th Kharkiv Defense Brigade and his unit was quickly sent off to other regions.
โ€จ
He would go to participate in operations in Slovyansk, Izyum, Bakhmut and later on Chasiv Yar.
โ€จ
He has since joined Trident Defense Force after graduating from the FPV Course where he now runs students through various courses to make them proficient in drone works.
โ€จ
โ€œIt really started out with my friend and I creating stuff, experimenting and testing things in a bunker. Itโ€™s the kind of mentality you have to have. Technology keeps changing. There is newer technology every day and with that comes newer counter measures, you have to keep up and become creative.โ€
โ€จ
He is the primary instructor and has seen 714 students come through the course and graduate.
โ€จ
โ€œUnofficially, part of the graduation is students have to send us a video of them successfully employing drones in the field once they deploy with their unit.โ€
โ€จ
โ€œThis isnโ€™t an easy course either. If you fail the culminating test then you go through the course again. We donโ€™t have resources like Kyiv, we have to make do. If you canโ€™t adapt, then youโ€™re off the course.โ€
โ€จ
During our visit Kan had the students conduct a foot patrol and react to contact with an FPV drone. As the drone rapidly approached them the patrol broke, some engaging the threat, others diving behind tries as it buzzed overhead.
โ€จ
Although sometimes training in a safe environment can be funny, the threat of FPVs is very real. Their speed and accuracy when employed correctly can only be described as horrifying.
โ€จ
โ€œI just want to teach as much as possible, create better FPV pilots. The war sucks. Iโ€™ve lost friends, lost brothers, lost my life, I canโ€™t be with my family. We are fighting for freedom, this is not freedom, we are fighting for it, right now it is prison.โ€
โ€จ
When asked for final thoughts, Kan said that he only wishes peace for all peoples.
