๐๐ - Kram Char is a group of volunteers, predominantly Ukrainian women, who operate out of Dnipro and Kramatorsk.
It was originally started at the very beginning of the invasion simply as individuals working together but after realizing it was going to be a long war they decided to create it as a formal organization. Their organization helps civilians and military alike.
Right now they have upwards of 40~ volunteers who contribute in a variety of ways, some volunteers take the supplies closer to the frontlines for the soldiers, basic necessities for survival and hygiene, humanitarian supplies are also taken to civilians who are in frontline areas.
Other volunteers coordinate and meet with soldiers coming off of the zero line who will bring supplies back themselves, or fundraiser for donations, while others also make camouflage netting, straps and more.
Volunteers also make candles to be used in the trenches, hot-meal โfast foodโ breakfasts, homemade breakfast bars, socks and hats. They also collect pillows, blankets, donations, wipes, juice and fruits.
These women have supported people in various regions like Chasiv Yar, Luhansk, Bakhmut and other areas. We met these women through a mutual connection, a woman a few of us met in early 2022, Mariana, a Ukrainian woman born in Kharkiv who had moved to Poland prior to the war starting. Once it began she started volunteering with Polish Emergency Services (Water Rescue) who did supply runs into the country.
Lewis told the volunteers; โShe was a woman of great patience, she helped us out a lot, in fact I think we were more problematic than we were helpful.โ They laughed at that.
The mood quickly changed though when one of the women showed us an audio clip sent from one of their friends, a colleague of theirs was in Odesa, her family as well. The audio was from an ongoing strike, multiple explosions were heard as her child is crying, the mother trying to comfort it as booms continue and car alarms go off.
Regardless of what you โthink about the warโ, having basic empathy and compassion does not require much effort.
